Travel Journal: Paris, Je t’aime March 15, 2013
Paris, the city of lights, owes its nickname to its reputation as the epicenter of the intellectual movement during the Age of Enlightenment. True to its name, over time the city’s graceful romanticism and inspiring culture has become a breeding ground for creativity, spawning the timeless works of numerous influential artists, philosophers, writers, designers, and scientists. Ernest Hemingway, one of the most notable members of the Lost Generation, famously wrote A Moveable Feast as a memoir of his time in Paris. One of his most impactful quotes:
If you are lucky enough to have lived in Paris as a young man, then wherever you go for the rest of your life it stays with you, for Paris is a moveable feast.
conjures instant nostalgia among those who have had the pleasure to have lived in Paris at some point in their lives.
During our stay in Paris, we were fortunate enough to enjoy walks along the Seine, take extended brunches at the Plaza Athénée, acquire rare teas at Mariage Frères, work out next to fabulous French socialites wearing Isabel Murant high-tops at L’Usine, take business meetings along the Champs-Élysées, order authentic macarons from the original Ladurée, and enjoy the company of familiar and newly made friends in the numerous cafes and restaurants.
Working backstage at Paris Fashion Week gave us the unique perspective of seeing storied, classic French brands brought to life in a modern way that remained respectful of their heritages. The same can be said for the city itself; there is a deep respect for history, from the charming historical architecture to the numerous exhibitions, but also a purveying sense of modernity that one almost wouldn’t expect to see among the winding limestone streets.
Paris is truly a feast for the soul that continues to feed long after one has left. The secret to ‘what makes Paris so enchanting’ lies in the indefinable, intangible nuances. It doesn’t matter where you are or who you’re with, as long as you’re present in the moment that ethereal magic will not be lost on you. Even otherwise mundane activities become lasting experiences: a walk to lunch off the beaten path, the gentle seduction of freshly cut roses at an outdoor florist stand, or the warm conversation slightly lost in translation with the wise and eccentric lady at the fruit stand who seemingly knows exactly who you are. And our favorite memory: meeting an impossibly chic French client backstage who started the conversation with “Excuse me, are you YÜLI? Welcome to Paris! I’ve been waiting for your line to come here for a long time.” Instantly, we were at home.
With spring in the air, Paris has never felt more magical and there has never been a better time to showcase our fresh, bio-active products to a new audience. We’ve had a wonderful experience introducing our products to the Parisian customer and we’re so overwhelmed with the response! We are excited that our new projects will bring us closer to the European audience, stay tuned.
